"Dancing Dragonflies" is my latest illustration. This drawing was inspired by a couple who are getting married in October, their theme is dragonflies and their colors are deep violet and cranberry red. For some reason I kept seeing two dragonflies in my mind and just had to get the design down on paper ... and the color combination of violet and red was a great plus!
The dragonflies took about two days to complete, during which time I kept mulling over in my mind what should I do with the background? Leaves kept popping up ... so, once I had completed the two dragonflies I made a copy and began experimenting ...since leaves predominated my mind, I started there, grabbed a green art pen and started randomly putting them down on paper. I liked the effect it was having and grabbed the original and spent the next two days drawing green leaves!
I think this drawing really turned out quite nice and am happy to share it with you today, so... here is

This illustration is now available in my Etsy Shop as an authorized art print (your choice of print size up to 8.5" x 11") and as an open edition ACEO (size 2.5" x 3.5").
I was really surprised when I made my first print of the original ... the print actually looked better than the original! That's a first and quite a nice surprise!
Happy Day All!
Karen Anne
Amazing details; the leaves, the backs of the dragonflies... simply awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks Magaly! I really appreciate your letting me know that you like it! 8D
DeleteKaren Anne this illustration of the dragonflies against the leaf background is stunning and the colors work beautifully together. I have another reason for dropping by than admiring your work and that is to let you know that you've won my drawing for Dillywink so please contact me so I can get your mailing address. Enjoy your day.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Maddy
Oh my goodness! Maddy, I am speechless! I fell in love with "Dillywink"! To think I won him just blows me away! I am giddy with delight and happy dancing all over the house! Now this is totally OZ-SOME!
DeleteWow, there is so much detail in the dragonflies and leaves, yet neither overpower the other. I'm always picking up little tips on your blog--I never would have thought to make a copy of my work and then work on the background--might have saved me card blanks, LOL!
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie ... I have been using this little tool for years ... saves a world of otherwise ruined pieces. I know the preferred way is to do the background first and then the main subject but I always seem to do things opposite; probably because I usually know what I want for the main subject and when working on the subject the background seems to evolve.
DeleteTry it, I think you'll like it!
Beautiful Karen Anne! I agree with Debbie, I am always learning something new from you! Are you giving the original to the couple that's getting married? I will e-mail soon ;o) Hopefully by tomorrow ;o)
ReplyDeleteThat is so nice to hear Stacy ... it is a good feeling when I hear others are learning something new from my posts! I'll watch for your email! 8)
ReplyDeleteHello Brandy, Your drawing is incredible, it is evident that you studied their form . . . very beautiful job! I also love the multi-leaf background . . . it is perfect.
ReplyDeleteIn reply to the comment you left on my blog: thanks for giving my dragonfly a name. I know that I have seen some in our area that are green and some that are a bright turquoises color. They are amazingly created. Have a wonderful week, and thanks for popping in, Connie :)
Hi Connie! Thanks for stopping by! I love dragonflies, they remind me of faeries in disguise! From what I have read, the "Twelve-spotted Skimmer Dragonfly" is quite common in the US and Canada. They are certainly beautiful!
