ANATOMY OF A DRAWING TUTORIAL (Or at least the way I do it....)

"Tutorial Post"
My dear friend and I were talking recently and she asked how I went about creating a drawing.  I kinda explained it to her and she asked if I could write it out so she could more clearly understand my creative process ... thus became the topic for this Post!

I begin first with an idea or inspiration.  In this case I was looking through some of my old sketches and found two that I had done back in the 1970's or 19780's.  I thought it would be fun to update the drawings and combine them in one picture.
I now proceed to redrawing each for use in my updated version.

As you can see, I have changed the position of the Piper and began plotting out my color scheme in the Drummer.

Now I make a photo copy of both pictures.  Cut them out and position them on another piece of paper and photo copy that.  I now have the layout of my illustration.
I then take this drawing over to my light table and lightly trace it onto a clean piece of Bristol art paper.  Once this is done, I begin inking in the lines with a permanent black ink pen until I have a completed drawing.

Here I end up with a drawing that is great for a color book illustration or having made into a rubber stamp.  I make a copy of this inked drawing in case I want to use it in the future, for whatever reason.  I then take the original and begin to color  in the characters with colored pencils.

While I am coloring, I keep a sheet of paper besides me for testing color schemes, color combinations, etc.

I complete coloring the lads and adding details with my ink pen and end up with the following:

At this point I could quit, but decide some background would probably be nice ... so I add background!

Now I study the drawing and determine that I want to add a bit more detailing with the pen and adjust the density of the colors by layering on more colored pencil.  Once this is completed and I am happy with the results, I have my completed illustration!

Once I am happy with the results, I scan it into my computer and add my watermark!
Sometimes I'll even have a little fun with the photo shop I am using and "tweek" the drawing a bit to give it a different look.

Here I changed it from full color to Sepia Tones  ...  figured this would be good for people who didn't care for the color scheme I had chosen but still liked the drawing.

AND THAT IS HOW I CREATE A DRAWING!

Today is a GREAT DAY! Jim & I have been married for 42 years!

On a cold and rainy day on Saturday, February 17, 1968 .... Jim and I were married!  It was a grand wedding and a delightful day!  We recently found an old 8 mm reel of film that was taken on that day and had it made into a DVD.  The original film was so damaged that only about 1 minute was actually visible ... but what was there was incredible!  My goodness, we were sooooooooooo young!

We have been through all kinds of times together ... adventures all ... some GRAND ... some not so happy.  But, after all these years we are still the best of friends and more in love than ever we imagined.

Our greatest blessings during this long trek through life are our children, their spouses, and the ten glorious grandchildren they have presented us with!

It is with great happiness that we celebrate this occasion and look forward to many, many, many more years of adventures and growing closer in our union with each other.

Our wish is that all couples are so blessed!

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 and I was able to use the instructions in this video to create a watermark brush for my listed art prints.  AND, if I can do it .... ANYONE can do it!  I am a total Photoshop Dummy but I did it!  It's kinda like having an electronic rubber stamp you can use on your art print photos!  Super easy to create and use!

Here is a copy of one of the prints I watermarked .....

Having trouble adding Google Analytics to Your Blog?

"Tutorial Post"
I spent 3 days trying to add Google Analytics to my Etsy Shop and to my Blog .... fiinally stumbled upon these instructions that work wonderfully!   So I am posting them here for anyone else who wants an easy way to add GA to their blog ....

Go into your Google Analytics account and sign in.

From there, look on the right hand side. There should be a link that says " + Add New Profile " Click it.

The page that comes up will be titled "Create New Website Profile"

On that page select "Add a Profile for a new domain"
Then, put your blog's address in the box where it asks "Please provide the URL of the site you would like to track." (example: Mine is http://www.irelandbrady.blogspot.com)

Click "Finish"

The next page that comes up is titled "Tracking Code"

Scroll down and under "What are you tracking?" Select... A single domain (default)

To the right of that, there's a window with some code in it. Copy this code and then open your blog in a separate window. Make sure you're logged into your blog if you aren't already.

Go to your blog's dashboard (there should be a link at the top that takes you there). From the dashboard, choose the link named "layout".

In the "Page Elements" tab, choose "add a gadget".

In the pop-up window that comes up, click the + button on the gadget entitled "HTML/JavaScript". It will open a box that asks for a title and content. Leave the title blank. Paste the code from Google Analytics into the "content" box then click save.

Go back to the Google Analytics page you got the code from and click the "Save" button at the bottom.

It will take approx 24 hours (possibly 48 if they're bogged down) for the GA to start reading your site. Once it does, when you open your GA, your blog will be listed and it will have a green check mark under "status".

The Tales of Danny Boy, The Tail Less Wonder!

Welcome to the world of Danny Boy!
Danny Boy is our 3 year old Miniature Pinscher.  He delights in many activities, especially SHOPPING!

This past weekend Danny Boy insisted on visiting some of his favorite stores, so off we started .... first to Goodwill where Danny Boy chanced upon some wonderful books for Daddy and wonderful cloth for Mom's Photo light box!

Next he wanted to check out some fabrics and yarn at Fabric Depot ... so off we headed in the Red Caddy.  There, Danny Boy pointed Mom in the direction of a terrific sale on some sock yarn.

To finish off the day, Danny Boy told TomTom to direct Mom and Dad over to Petco for some much needed dog food and treats!  Once this was accomplished Danny Boy was pleased to go home and stretch out of the couch for a much needed rest after an exhausting day of shopping!

Stay tuned for more in The Tales of Danny Boy, The Tail Less Wonder  ....

Finding new artists to share ....

One of the things I would like to do with my blog is share the artwork of other artists I find on my wanderings through Etsy.

Today I would like to introduce you to the beautiful artwork of JodiDoodles. Her floral drawings are exquisite ... you can find Jodi's shop at:

Take a visit to her shop and see if you don't agree.

New blogger on the block ...

Hi! My name is Karen Anne aka IrelandBrady ... I am new to blogging so I'll just start off telling you a bit about myself.
I am a visual artist, have been drawing ever since I can remember. Put a pen or pencil in my hand and a drawing or doodling will happen! After years of drawing I have finally decided I really like drawing charming children and fairies. I like my drawings to look into the eyes of the viewer and draw them in; so they start dreaming up a story to go with the drawing.

I often wonder if I have ADD ... when I was younger my Mom could always tag a subject I had no interest in because the text books associated with that class where LOADED with various doodles! In the margins, over the text, anywhere I could find a blank spot! My Mom said she loved opening those books and looking at my bits and pieces of art dispersed throughout the books. The more doodles, the more boring the class! Amazing that I graduated!

My mind is so easily distracted, I actually have a hard time driving! I'll start out with the best of intentions when something catches my eyes and my imagination goes into over drive wondering how I could use this, what colors would I employ, is there a new technique I could try, etc. Inevitably I drive right past my destination...sometimes by several miles! Thank God my children gave us a TomTom for Christmas! Now when I am off in my day dream world, TomTom jousts me out and I actually get to my destination on my first attempt!
